SC PDAT and Providence Presbytery Working Together

As part of PDA’s programs of disaster services, Providence Presbytery (Rock Hill, SC) was a recipient of a $7,500.00 grant in connection with the church’s response to Hurricane Helene. Helene struck on September 26-27, 2024, causing extensive damage, power outages, and food loss in the area.

The funds were used to address pressing needs across the community:

Addressing Food Insecurity
A substantial portion of the grant was directly allocated to Bethesda York. This was crucial for replenishing and boosting their community feeding program, especially since widespread power outages meant many families lost food and faced increased hunger. This program is ongoing.

Supporting Individuals in Hardship
Direct relief was provided to an individual in need. A member of First Presbyterian Church of York who experienced financial hardship due to a fallen tree, was provided assistance with their cleanup and repairs.

Repairing Critical Infrastructure
The grant also played a vital role in ensuring safety and preventing further catastrophe. Bethelwoods Camp and Conference Center received funds towards the catastrophic damage sustained by their dam. This repair, part of a much larger effort, was essential because a broken dam would endanger lives downstream and could turn a catastrophic event into a “historically catastrophic” one.

Assisting Vulnerable Homeowners
A significant portion went to Habitat for Humanity of York County (HFHYC) to support uninsured and underinsured homeowners. This was particularly important for those who cannot afford deductibles or lack adequate insurance. With these funds, HFHYC was able to make a tangible difference in individual lives. In one example, a large tree was removed from a home that had posed a significant safety risk for over two months. In another example, the roof was replaced on a home damaged by Hurricane Helene.
